Cosmic Puffin 2012

A new festival for us on Mesea Island. Our host was the genial Micheal Shepheard who booked the Beaufort Scale to play on the aHulaBula stage- cpnsisting of a Vintage Green Ambulance called Althea. We also got to play DJ tag for a few hours with Input Junkie & Mogston- nippy but splendid fun.

The Beaufort Scale & Dialog>@Koko

I have recently joined The Beaufort Scale on guitar duties for their live shows……..and they managed to land a gig at Koko supporting Plaid & Hexstatic- wow what a night! Before I got into music production I started as a guitarist in an experimental electronic band called Hive, so this was like coming back full circle. Hopefully we will be doing more gigs together.

Mindfields Launch Party- Dublin

What a weekend! First atmospheric ambient sets were performed at the National Concert Hall in Dublin with Enrico Coniglio, Steffano Guzzetti & Roger Doyle. Francesca Coniglio accompanied me on visuals for this set. Afterward we hit a nightclub and found ourselves dancing to Blondie, Gary Newman, Joy Division & the Beach Boys. Top night.

The next day the sets were cranked up a notch@Whelans, where we were joined by more of the Psychonavigation roster. Mick Chillage & Macshine played my favourite sets of the night, but it was all good for electronica fans.

Planet Angel Chilled in a Field

Another fab time- big thanks and respect to Dom for all his hard work to make the sound in the Chill tent happen. Great sets from Omeron, Input Junkie, the Commodore and Ollie (diiging the Donnie Darko look). Lots of good bands also. My DJ set turned into a 5 hour epic………phew!

DJ set at the Inspiral Lounge, Camden, Friday 24 June

I have been invited to DJ in support of Terranine & Orchid Star at the Inspiral Lounge. I have been to this lovely venue a few times and always wanted to play there, so I’m muchly looking forward to this. As I normally do Ableton sets of my own tunes it will be fun to do something a little different.

Summer gigs

This summer has been a lot of fun gig wise. First off Ambiosonic in France. The setting is truely magical and it was great to meet up with artists I played with last year & meet some new ones. Andy Stone came over from Canada to perform visuals and despite a 24 hour delay managed to get onsite 2 hours before we were due to start! The sound system was top-notch which made all those months of prepping material worth it plus the crowd were very friendly and up for it. Seeing it go off under the stars at 1am is a memory I will treasure.

Next up Purple radio’s Warm Lager event. This was a great family day out and Sarah and kids joined us. Another wonderful setting with the DJ’s playing in a giant teepee.
The dj’s played everything from drum & bass, disco, calypso, acoustic songs plus an A/V set from Minke with some wonderfully disturbing Grindhouse visuals! Andy Stone and I performed our second A/V set of the summer. After we finished I strolled out the teepee to be greeted by the full moon rising above the site.

Finally Planet Angel’s “Chilled in a Field”. I traveled down with Input Junky. Neither of us knew what to expect, but Dom Graveson & “The Commodore” was a very affable hosts in the Chilled tent and we had a right laugh. My family & Digitonal turned up on Saturday and there were great acoustic sets from Angel Kelly and Frodo Freud. As well as our electronic sets on the Friday we somehow ended up very drunk behind the DJ booth on Saturday night. After Jon’s selection, I was too out of it to figure out the mixer and yelled out my tunes at him to play-wierdly it seemed to work- how could you not love a dodgy selection of 80′s tunes done in a gypsy jazz style! Apparently I was pole dancing around the tent- John put me to bed shortly afterwards- oooffff!

Ambiosonic 2010

This is a wonderful Ambient music event in the South of France, full of eccentric characters and one of the friendliest crews! Andy Stone & I will be performing a Dialog> A/V set. If last year was anything to go by, this should be one of the best parties of the year.

2009

As we enter 2010 a new look website with a blogging engine finds me in a reflective mood regarding 2009. Pretty good year- here’s the highlights.

Run Silent Run Deep

Written during a busy 18 month period of gigging with Andy Stone (BPGZ from SoxaN) on visuals. The need for new material for gigs spurred on the process. I had normally co-written with Alan (taoyoyo), so to put something together that was mostly me was a personal milestone (“Taking the Easy Way Out” was a co-write with The Beaufort Scale). Andy being a DJ as well as a VJ made useful suggestions along the way.

I sequenced the album so it started quickly and then drifted downwards in tempo to the more ambient pieces and then came back up again. My intent was to simulate being submerged and released to the surface. I was interested in the imagery of water being a metaphor for the unconscious mind, taoyoyo came up with great artwork. It came out on Lo-tek

Gothic Monks was remixed by Echaskech went down well with the Deep House DJ’s and the downtempo tracks earned plays in the Ibiza sunset bars.

Immersion

I collaborated with the very talented VJ Lukas Vojir for this gig & this is the footage.

Ambiosonic Festival

I was delighted to be able to take the ambient A/V show I had been developing with Andy Stone to the South of France.
We ramped it up towards the end and were rewarded with silhouettes of people dancing behind Andy’s visuals- like a rave homage to ”Tales of the Unexpected”!

Beautiful setting, Quadraphonic sound system in the woods, great artists, huge insects, 15 hour set from Mixmaster Morris and one of the nicest crews I’ve ever met- I have never been so well looked after.
Massive thanks to Kat Fly for taking a chance on us and for setting up a tent for “you and your lover” & to Jean-Louise & Steph for being such gracious hosts. I felt I left part of my soul there when we departed.

Festinho

With some crazy stages (Cow Byre and a gingerbread house in “Looking Glass Woods”) and eclectic line up to boot, Festinho is a great little festival which raises money for the Brazillian Steet children. Many acts who I’ve become friendly with have played here, which makes for a fantastic atmosphere.

Thanks to Jon and Jay for giving me the closing slot in the Cow Byre- a nice intimate space with a wicked sound system. The set went down well, apart from a bizarre request for the A-team theme!?!?

As a bonus I infiltrated into other peoples sets. I played guitar on one of Minke’s tracks earlier in the year & it was great to hear it blasting out of a sound system. Echaskech played their version of my track “Gothic Monks” on the main stage and the crowd went mental.
